  • hey man, do me a favor and answer this question for me? i REALLY would love to know what scale your playing up and down, and if your not using one, how would you solo like that? PLEASE let me know

  • I've already been asked this via mail, so I'll copy my answer here for everyone to see:

I mostly improvise over scales. In the video I improvise over dorian scales. But it's also often a mix of the dorian scale with pentatonic or the Blues scale (with the blue notes).

  • The most important is the ear though. Sometimes I also like to play out, that's to say if you have a piece in A minor, just play for 2 or 3 bars the Ab major scale just to return to the A minor scale. Or practice some licks which you can transpose and/or use like sequences.

  • To be able to improvise, you have to absolutely know how the chords are built. Let's say you decide to play something in A minor, you have to know that the notes are basically A C E. The seventh is G and the ninth is B. Those notes make it funky and jazzy. Then you have to know a bit about functional harmony, for example that the dominant in the key of A is then E, played E G# B. Here you can use the seventh too.

  • So, knowing what chords fit to the key you want to play in, is the first step. Then you have to know the scales which can fit a specific chord. For minor chords you can for example use pentatonics, A minor harmonic or melodic, or, as I said before, dorian, the church modes. With a major chord you have to change the scale then. For E major chord, you have to play f.ex. E major scale.

  • When the seventh is played you should then alter the scale, that's to say, play the minor seventh when improvising. This scale is the same as the church mode which is called mixolydian.

Hope this can help. If you have further questions, ask :)
