May 16, 2010. So it's a special day at Week 26 of my cello journey. I got to see my cello teacher perform today at a solo concert she put on. She was totally awesome. She played the Schumann Cello Concerto, Le Grand Tango by Piazzolla and Beethoven Sonata No. 3. I was blown away and so inspired to keep improving that maybe one day I'll play like her.
I've been working on mostly my cello ensemble and orchestra pieces as it is getting close to the end season performances, so not doing much in the way of solo stuff. (why am I talking like that? I guess I feel hurried to become a 'musician' and now being in the music 'community' even on such a low level as I am, it really feels good again. Back in the ol' piano days, it was more anxiety than enjoying the moment. But being at the Royal Conservatory today really felt wonderful to be surrounded by such history, musicians everywhere...
So today I taped the first movement of the Sonata V - after hearing countless times my idol (one of them) Ophelie Gaillard play these so beautifully, and with such pure Baroque-ness. She's really my fave so far as interpretation of these Sonatas. Here is her link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaYbTPuon_w (no video, just a photo of a dead bird :-p )
Her recording is much faster than the harpischord accompaniment that I had, and I like her use of embellishments, which I tried to incorporate into my playing.
After having just changed my A string (it was unwinding badly and the gut core was hanging by a thread) actually the sound of this new string (still Eudoxa) is so much better than the last batch. Maybe quality control...? Anyway, I feel like I am getting closer to the ultimate sound of what I want my cello to sound like. I struggled in the beginning, not really bonding that well or satisfied with its sound. Everybody always thinks other people's cellos sound better than their own. Over the past few weeks, mine is starting to grow on me.
Maybe it's love affair after all.
