You want to solve political corruption and the economic crisis at once? Pass a law stating no member of Congress or Senate can be payed more than the average U.S. income, then they would have an incentive to truly help the middle class.

Actually, in Lincoln's day, EVERYONE was conservative. You never had Lincoln talking about a "living, breathing" constitution, or redistributing wealth. The modern left-right paradigm came about during the "Pro(Re)gressive Era" of the early 1900s. The politics of the 19th century don't break down into left and right. The main issues were things like tariffs and the gold standard and so on.
