jeez, frank hardly "destroys" him. O brien really should have apologised but, in all fairness he was just commenting on a story he read, so the real blame lies with the editor that let it get through and/or lampard's ex for telling porkies to the paper.

He was doing more than commenting on a story, he was slandering Lampard - making him out to be some sort of monster. (This video didn't contain the full phone call unfortunately)
He said "I was just reading the news" because he was too cowardly to stand up and acknowledge what he had done was wrong.
