The echo is automatic, and controlled by a slider directly on his mic.

Being a beatboxer, I can vouch for him that the hand motions are for a mix of showing what sound you're making and to help show what instrument it's supposed to be, also partly for keeping beat, and lastly... how interesting would it be if he just stood there not moving and did it? it adds colour and emotion to the music, and gives you something to actually watch.

I beatbox, and the hand is for 2 reasons (at least for me) 1. it shows what sound you're making, and 2. it helps you keep the beat... but everything you hear is his mouth, he just has a looping machine, and an echo effect...
