One of my (major) early drum influences…There’s playing the drum then there’s Billy Cobham playing the drums…. His versatility is unmistakably brilliant..PERIOD!

One thing that makes Billy Cobham who he is, is he keeps up with the times, he is a drummers drummer who can play Steve Gadd one day and Bill Bedford the next then switch back to the fusion drummer Billy Cobham then be Buddy Rich the next day - I challenge u to find a drummer as versatile

I've never seen him play on such a small set not such a defined style - Billy Cobham is one those rare progressive drummers who is always relevant to the times he lives in

I remember in the 70s waching him,,,wow.

His solos are songs themselves. He is a composer. His kit is an orchestra. Notice no stick twirling? He is in a zone that might not even be physical. I've met and seen him live. He can play sensitive like this but at times he will explode and break a brand new black pin stripe. I was standing right behind him when he did it once while dueling w/Steve Smith and Louis Bellson. I was like WTF? Did he just pop a stick through a brand new drumhead?
