how would you go about creating your own gradients to use in vegas?

I suppose you could make some in photoshop, but I don't see why you can't make them here, you have all the tools necessary.

I was hoping this would show how to add a gradient over a video clip (with a lowered transparency or something) as a way of coloring the video. Is that possible?

@snubbly Just put the gradient down like a normal clip, then change the transparency of that whole track over on the left side

@baftekkelTV You're probably sorted by now, (6 months no answer?) but when I had that problem it was down to codecs. I'd recommend K-Lite Codec Pack. Damn useful.

It does because if you change the video to overlay it goes overtop of videos with cool effects, good for toning good jobe keep it up Montagical
