LUPANG HINIRANG - The Philippine National Anthem.

The anthem's lyrics originate from a poem entitled 'Filipinas,' written in Spanish by Jose Palma, while its music was composed by Julian Felipe.

Felipe was instructed by then-President Emilio Aguinaldo to make a tune for the anthem of the new Republic.

Pres. Aguinaldo was pleased with Felipe's composition, so did the countless Filipinos who joyously celebrated their independence on June 12, 1898. The said tune was eventually entitled as the Marcha Nacional Filipina - The Philippine National March.

As the Americans subsequently ruled the Philippines after the Spanish ceded to them the islands in the late 19th century for $20million, the anthem was translated into English, entitled as 'the Philippine Hymn' - but was still sung under the American Flag.

After the Philippines gained its independence in 1946, the Philippine Government finally approved the anthem to be sung in Filipino - the 1948 version entitled, 'O Sintang Lupa.' The 1948 version was used until Ramon Magsaysay rose to the Presidency.

President Magsaysay ordered his government to look over the Filipino lyrics and in 1956, just a year before Magsaysay died in a catastrophic plane crash in Cebu, the anthem was approved in its revised version.

According to Wikipedia, minor changes were done on the the anthem in the 1960's by Felipe de Leon and that his version is now the country's current anthem.

The anthem by have gone through so many changes - but it still represents the strong sense of duty and sacrifice of the Filipino Spirit in order to protect the freedoms that we Filipinos today enjoy - freedoms that so many have died for.

'Lupang Hinirang' - Chosen Land
- Julian Felipe/Jose Palma

Bayang magiliw
Perlas ng Silanganan,
Alab ng puso
Sa dibdib mo'y buhay.

Lupang hinirang,
Duyan ka ng magiting,
Sa manlulupig,
'Di ka pasisiil.

Sa dagat at bundok,
Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw,
May dilag ang tula at awit
Sa paglayang minamahal.

Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y
Tagumpay na nagniningning,
Ang bituin at araw niya
Kailan pa ma'y 'di magdidilim.

Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati't pagsinta,
Buhay ay langit sa piling mo;
Aming ligaya, na 'pag may mang-aapi
Ang mamatay nang dahil sa 'yo.

  • National hymn (anthem) of Philippines is a cute, nice, melodic song.

Maybe this performance is too marciare ampolloso (conceited) trying to imitate performance of European standards. By this, it looses a bit its character.

Filipinos are super talented to sing and dance. Indeed! But they perform and they like quite, not so pick-full melodies. This totally accords their characters and the all around nature.

  • @ARTEMISAEROCLUB

Quite an interesting point you're making here.

  • hello i'm from indonesia and i like philiphina

  • @ARTEMISAEROCLUB I disagree. The National Anthem was never intended to sound "cute, nice, and melodic". Emilio Aguinaldo had Felipe revise the anthem's tune until he found that it was dignified enough to accompany the first flag-raising of the Philippine Flag. I'm sure Aguinaldo, a man of magnanimity, wanted it to border (if not exemplify) marciare ampolloso. For a reason of musical theory, Felipe did mark his score as a "Marcha"... not in the style of some novelty Yoyoy Villame song.

  • BAUTISTA,PANGASINAN - HOME OF THE PHILIPPINE NATIONAL ANTHEM...

  • @viktoruschka As you can hear, the national anthem of the Philippines is sung in Filipino. Goodness, the last time it was sung in English was in the early 1950's! Your making quite a confusing point - first you're praising it as passionate and cool, then suddenly you're dismissing it as boring and lame. I'm not being rude, but, I assume you have hearing problems. I suggest going to the doctor as soon as possible. Peace.

  • @pilipinasmabuhay100 Otro que se cree Beethoven... your anthem is quite nice, passionate, cool, the only issue is that you sing it in English.... so boring, so lame, like all the colonies of H.M. the Queen.. Or, even worse, like USA... Gott verhütte!

  • Que no ven, my dear Filipinos, que —quieran o no— son ESPAÑOLES? Su lengua está más que plagada de el verdadero lenguaje de las Pilipinas... no hay cosa que ya los haga para atrás... En todo caso, USA will be speaking Spanish in a few years, so, you better learn the language that God gave u..... Chavacanos are quite a role model :) Gracias, y si no les gusta, se me van jodiendo! :) Yo AMO a los filipinos cuando NO hablan inglés

  • @demandselly Learn some Spanish, my friend! :) If you happen to think in English, then, you're quite "fucked" as Gordon Ramsay said... BBC, not American, you know :)
