Why did he use a lighter? Maybe it's because he couldn't smell anything with his nose.

You're right to point that out! Most racists & ignorants have this insane need to find goofy traits in individuals who are different, so to justify their superiority...
So many of them simply are unhappy & anxious people, so if they can blame their own unhappiness onto others, they imagine that this makes them stand out!
