@leggendkillerr gauges are thickness. 18 gauge is 1.2 mm 16 gauge is 1.6mm 14 gauge is I think 2.8mm. Mild steel is ok better ones are prietty good in fact.

Seems like an animal skin type material. They're a part of the gauntlets themself. They're connected to the steel by those rounded metal bolts you can see along the top of the steel.
