Wii System Menu Version 4.0: Play Games from an SD Card/SDHC Card Support! (HD)

Here is a video showcasing the main feature added from the new updated system menu.

You can now put any Virtual Console/WiiWare/Wii Channel downladed from the Wii Shop Channel on your SD card and run it from there using the new SD Card Menu. They have also finally added SDHC card support which allows you to use cards with as much space as 32 gigs.

All that it does to allow you to use a channel is copy it temporarily onto your Wii's memory. Unfortunately you still have to have saves in your Wii's memory, but that is a small problem anyway.
