@artrca1000 for me, the point of the "opens" was that through such a drastically simplified and basic compositional device, its possible to more clearly see the careful articualtion of surface and painterly incident than through the tumult of a full-fledged "all over" action painting (Pollock, DeKooning etc). Here, its the foreground/background relationship stripped to it's core, with the fabric of it's making made brazenly bare.

I have been a great admirer of Mr. Motherwell's work for years, but I must say these "opens" seem to me to be a modern art boondoggle. Wholly uninteresting and easy.
