A clip of a humans versus liir battle in Sword of the Stars. 44 human cruisers are defeated by 8 liir cruisers in a savage battle that lasted about seven minutes. I know it's sort of a lot of the same, but you get the gist of it.

This clip was uploaded because at the time there were virtually no gameplay videos of Sword of the Stars, and I wanted to show it to people. I do not claim to have done an excellent job in capturing or editing this video, I was simply trying to show how intense battles could get in this game.

  • I got this game, and frankly i feel the combat system is the weakest part of the game. Only very few ships of my 200+ fleet can engage at any given time, the controls for tactical combat (micro) are confusing as hell, and it requires way too mcuh micro to manage fleets with the command ships.

Now, whenever i play, i -never-bother fighting my battles manually. I just build a ton of ships and send them in.

  • @TwadFeu You need ships with the "Squadron/Strikeforce/Armada/Fleet CnC" to increase the number of ships in combat at any given time. IIRC it's about 5 destroyers, or 2 cruisers, or 1 dreadnought without command. With the highest command you can get at least 38 destroyers, 12 cruisers, or 4 dreadnoughts in battle simultaneously - plus the flagship.

If there's a complaint against the game it's usually not that there's micromanagement, but that there's not enough.

  • Do you need to put the sheild section on all of the ships? and are the shields really effective?

  • @Sveken Yes, you need a shield section on each ship that you want to be shielded. It's a "mission" IE middle component for destroyers, bridge for cruisers and dreadnoughts. Dreads can only use "deflectors" though, which only cover the forward arc.

Mark I shields can only take a few hits before recharging. Mark IVs take a real hammering, and there are also shields that are impervious to EITHER energy OR ballistic weapons.

  • How do you sell/delete a ship/weapons platform?

  • There's a scuttle option on the toolbar above your fleet list. That recoups a small amount of the build cost. Technology can increase the amount recouped.

  • this just shows why you never mess with the liir

  • How I hate the Liir. Gigantic planets with nothing but endless water populated by malevolent, fully sentient fish things armed with weapons of mass destruction always make me nervous.

  • Freaking Liir. "Peaceful" is not the word I'd pick. They love to invite me into an alliance or destroy me with bioweapons. Once I am with them, they wait until pretty much everyone else is in the alliance as well, then kick me out and exterminate me.

After roughly the fifth time they did this, I have adopted a new motto regarding space tarvel: "Nuke the whales!"

I like the Zuul, Hiver and Morrigi, though. They be good people.

  • Looks like Homeworld. I rather liked homeworld.

  • The liir will be the most peaceful and gullible allies...until you accidently make a joke they don't understand and think you're Suul'ka. That's when they turn genocidal.

  • What have learned kids? Don't bring fusion guns to an anti-matter projector fight.

Anti-matter projectors == dread rapers. Oddly, I've found projector dreads to be freaking useless.

  • @Microverse1 I have played both and honestly they both are very well done games that you are worth getting, but I would wait for sword of the stars 2 to come out

  • @liambror Ironic, considering they're the most peaceful race in the game...most of the time...

  • Shields are not that great . i would go for just relectors and deflector cause they don't fade. When top end tech comes around, shields are obsolete cause of PD phasers, PD absorbers, and mason projector shields. there are also bunch of weapon the hit through shields. deflectors might be the only thing that might be of any use due to impactor dreads are scary

  • Meh. You killed some under gunned cruisers.

  • @VaingloryMarshall hey any idea how to fight properly in a tactical combat? I lose horribly with advanced ships in tactical combat but auto resolve and I beat 20 ships no casualties with heavy damage on the first wave of ships (which I repair no problem). I can even do this to advanced lirr ships as a human player using just stormers and heavy drivers! I have no idea how to fight properly as my ships miss all the damn time... there seem to be no guides or anything

  • Anyone who has played both this and Sins of a Solar Empire Extensively let me knowhow they compare. I have only played Sins. It seems like this at least has a single player campaign.
