  • Thanks to Marjorie LaBreton, Conserative party leader in the senate, we finally have a window into the Conservative thinking on digital innovation.

She says not only does she not understand technologies like facebook but she thinks they're dangerous.

  • DMCA can f--- off.

  • Jim Prentice needs to resign. The current Minister of Industry is a joke. He is incompetent and an embarrassment to the people of Canada.

  • At the same time the senate was continuing to pay Ray lavigne 700K.

  • ...if only there were some way for the Canadian people to remove the corrupt officials from office...

  • Excellent work Charlie Angus!

  • Unfortunately, Jim Prentice gave a very partisan answer in place of proper answer to a question that concerns Canadians. Not surprising given his lack of understanding on the issue and his refusal to have any real public consultation on the matter in favour of backroom deal with industry lobbyists.

As for the US Ambssador's insistance on an American style DMCA, he is entitled to voice his concerns, but it will be the Canadian government who will make the final decission on the matter.

  • What the heck is an "industrial consumer". Prentice should really get his head around the fact that "industries" don't vote, only people (consumers) do. He isn't elected by the CRIA, or MPAA, he's elected by his constituents. And they don't want him to make their children, or even themselves criminals.

The acronyms aren't what need to be debated, it's the ideas they represent. And WIPO and DMCA are anti-free market, and anti-consumer/constituent.

  • you understand. i can't believe that someone in a position of authority understands. capitalist interests will prevail, at the expense of criminalising the people. maybe we need more than just separation of the legislative and executive, but separation of the public and industry too? i see far too many bills are introduced and passed because of self importance and ill directed concern. a select committee stamping out popularist careering making legislation should be introduced.

  • This proposed legislation is a suck up to US presure and to media conglomerates and does not in any way have the consumer in mind. If it passes the Supreme Court will overturn it at great cost to the taxpayers.

  • By the way, I consider myself very conservative. It's not conservatives who are in favor of DRM crap, it's the snake oil salesmen who make it and the dupes who buy it. If you alienate potential allies by sticking to nonsensical party lines, then the snake oil salesmen will win in your country like they have been in the U.S.

  • @jackdeath

I can't comment on Prentice from where I sit south of the border, but it sounds like our ambassador is an embarrassment to us, if he's pushing DMCA in your country. So far, we haven't had much luck reigning in our greedy media giants and crooked/idiot politicians on this. Better luck to you guys.
