This is the 'Station Identification' bumper used between commercials during the 1966-67 broadcast of the ABC mega-hit television show 'The Fugitive', starring David Janssen. This bumper queued the local television network affiliate to identify itself by its call sign. "The Fugitive will continue following station identification" would then be followed by the local TV announcer saying something like, "You're watching WTAE-TV, Pittsburgh." The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) rules dictate that TV stations must periodically identify themselves to the viewers. At that time, station ID bumpers were a regular part of American television viewing and this method was used well into the 1970s but was soon replaced with the station logo graphics at the bottom of the screen that viewers now see today. Anyway, this piece of mindless info should not overshadow that fact that 'The Fugitive' was one of the best TV shows ever created and had some of the best writers and screen talent assembled. Even the final episode which aired on August 29, 1967 captured a then record-breaking audience with 72% of all TVs in the country tuned in. Watching 'The Fugitive' is well worth your time, buy the DVDs and see why the drama and suspense of this show surpasses much of what's offered on television today. The show ran for four seasons from 1963-67. Seasons 1-3 are in b/w and the final 4th season is in color.

  • After this "bumper", the ABC logo would normally appear (with a staff announcer saying, "This is ABC"), followed by a 40 second "station break", usually ending with the local affiliate identifying themselves before the second half of the show appeared...
