The long story of human history has been punctuated with times of famine. It is only in the late 20th century that "first world" countries like the US have established a continuous, reliable, over-supply of food.
The amount of food supplied by the American "food industry" greatly exceeds the amount needed by Americans. Yet many continue to eat like there is some kind of food shortage or famine about to happen any minute.
It never comes. The real danger to life is now, not the shortage of food but it's tremendous over-abundance.
