***SPOILERRR: I'm just really happy that Alto in the end chose Sheryl. I was also happy for Ranka that she did make her way to the top and fulfilled her lifetime dream to be a singer but then it would've been unfair if she had Alto too. There was a balance in both of their wishes. A truly beautiful series! <3

Macross F was created by Shoji Kawamori and Satelight, not Sunrise. Presumed dead isn't new idea in Macross universe but Alto is exception. Director announced clearly he's live.

And actually Sunrise is very good for kids ;) In 80s series they're able to kill 90% or 100% of characters in the end. No exception for main.

If you watched the movie, in the credits you see that Sheryl isn't dead. You also see that Sheryl's earring twinkles, which is what happens when they pair are together (according to some sources). So it implies that Alto comes back. Alto isn't dead anyways, he got folded out by the Vajra before the quantum cannon hit.

I hope this clears up any misunderstandings.
