I noticed I do the long draw...backwards! How unique am I? And listen, if the only comment you are gonna leave is "You're fat", or something else rude and off color, don't waste your time because, thank you kindly, I've already noticed that smite detail (you dorkheads).

  • i *cannot* get the hang of drafting. do you have any advice?

  • Practice makes perfect. Be sure to have your hands far enough apart to allow the fibers to slip past each other, & also don't have a death grip. If you need to, park & draft: Build up some tension in your draft, park (stop treadling), then practice drafting. All good tings come with time, patience, and PRACTICE-PRACTICE-PRACTICE. :)

  • Be sure to pinch the twist so that the twist does not travel into the bulk of your roving as that will make it very difficult to draft into the thickness/thinness that you want. I will PM you with some of my favorite internet resources as youtube won't let me post a link in comments.

  • haha dorkheads.

Anyway, I THINK you're just using a rolag there to spin with, is that correct?I am not sure how to spin from rolags since they're going the wrong way length-wise. :/

  • Yeappers, that there be a rolag. That was before I bought all my fancy spinning equipment. :)

  • Why do you call it backwards? I am new to this and although right handed, I short-draw draft with my left hand. My left shoulder gets cranky if I hold my arm out too long....

I like how we could see you clamping the fiber with the rear hand. I needed to see it. I can read about it all I want, but my fingers need to learn..

    Thanks for helping us!

  • Because it was backwards from what I was watching. The pinching was happening closer to the opening and my pinching was back near the rolag. :) Have fun!

  • Rexenne!!

You are super and is good that you keep up you cool videos!

    thank you!! :)

  • I am doing research with my 9 year old on being a spinner in the colonies, circa the 1700"s & we came upon your video. Great way for us to watch it! Through all of this research, etc., my husband may have to worry about me starting a new hobby! Thanks for the video! :0) Oh, btw, I'm on my son's youtube acct. :)

  • I pinch with my right and draft with my left too. I'm right handed and everyone asks if I'm left handed.

I started out that way because I was taught on an old quill wheel and the only way to treadle put the quill on my right.

  • although I am not a REAL observant Youtube watcher, are you left handed?

My spinning drafting looks just like yours, but opposite hands. I hope you get back into fiberness soon :) I love your videos!

  • Beautiful spinning job! I'm a beginner. Can you do the long draw on a hand spindle?

  • I spin that way, too, mostly, sort of.

I'm also, well, "fluffy." I figure it's better to have a little softness in the body than a lot of softness (and possible rot) in the head. I, for one, like your videos. You kept me spinning when I almost gave up.

  • This was interesting. Was the twist getting into the thick fibers before you pulled them though? it didn't look like it was bothering you. I'd see you'd take your pinch away and then keep spinning for awhile anyway.
