your feet are not working for you but against you ... you should try and keep your heels in the same line, your guard should be as wide as the line of your sholders and your knees slightly bended to mentain a better balcance ...
watch covaliu at athens to see how he managed to land on his ass at the olympic games he wanted to step back but he started with the front legg
and when you attack remember to always strech your hand 1st and after move the leggs.(this is avaliable for foil mostly)

bad footwork
move your back hand around too much
stop bending your head forward (it puts you off balance anyway)

Your right! What are they doing! I have a rare footage of the Italian Fencing Master Mangiarotti. Now that is awesome! Check it out.

I'm not the top of anything - I'm a complete novice. Thanks for your helpful remarks though and the very instructional video response. I particularly liked the second video response in which you demonstrate such marvellous footwork yourself. I must have missed the lesson to learn the clever move where you end up on your ass. Perhaps you could talk me through that one.

I slipped, it happens to even the best of us. I'm not going to make any excuse for that. Did you see all the other shots though. Either way after all is said and done, you are definitely a walk in the park unless you learn how to defend against wrist flicks. There is a difference between slipping and having bad footwork, You my friend have bad footwork.

if you are on top of the country or were on top then I would like to fence you someday. I don't know though... From what I've seen on this video,I'm having second thoughts... as it will be a walk in the park for me, and my primary weapon is not even epee, its Foil! The footwork is really bad and I would suggest working on it among with other things.
