What you are forgetting is that this is a musical about Gypsy. She wasn't famous because she was a well dressed stripper - there were thousands of those.  What set her apart is that she was funny. She took 5 minutes to remove a single glove. She'd remove a ribbon from her hair and tie a bow around a bald man's comb-over. For every joke, she'd remove a pin and toss it into a Tuba. And her transition from a simple stripper to a star in a year was due to entirely her comedy. That's her gimmick.
