Mickey Mouse Monopoly 2/5

A documentary about Disney. At about 7:01 they make a dig at housewifery which I think is unfair, ignorant, and just plain stupid. There are many women who love being housewives and think it is r...

Great video. Thank you very much for posting.

Dr Gail Dines is very informed and clear. She is right. As consumers we could be far more discerning and demanding about what we expect.

Rather than being passive sheep that just consume the constructs that are sold to us.

Parents spend more time with their children than they did 40 years ago.

I was a child 40 years ago &can tell you that is not accurate.

Women did not work whilst their children were young &were at home all day. They walked their children to school &back. Like most children I went home for lunch until I was 11 yrs old.

Children did not attend school till 5 yrs old.

Mothers met their children from school @ 3.15pm. There were very few after-school activities.

Mothers had far more time than they do today. Fathers worked less hours.

So what informs your statement?

@Knoss

Also, there were no videos. Children's TV was only on for a few hours a day. So the pattern of sitting children down in front of the TV or video as a distraction at any time of day just did not occur.

Fathers were usually home by 5.30pm each evening.

Most young people I know today have to both work to make ends meet. Their children go to childminders from babies -and to play-schools from 2yrs old.

Working hrs, whilst officially shorter, have in reality got much longer.

the beast yells at belle because he's a beast! they wouldn't have made his character a beast on the outside if he wasn't rude and selfish...it really says nothing about gender roles, that's just what the character is meant to be...and note how all the "experts" are female (except henry giroux, but he didn't comment on the male-female relationships)

The issue with body language is missing an important point. These are cartoons and as such they depend on caricature. Beauty and the Beast for instance has a variety of characters Maurice is short and fat with a thick mustache, while Gauston is ruggedly handsome with a steroid build to match his lack of consideration. The flighty blondes are overly sexualized, but Belle is idolized in a to the point of becoming a charicature in itself.

7:01 "It's makes no sense today"

WELL DUUH! Of course it makes no sense because you're delibrately using a modern concept (feminism) on a cartoon set in the 30s. Talk about knocking down straw men!

also what they dont say is even though the beast is yelling, belle still stands up to him. they also don't say how all these female heroines. Even in 59' with Princess Aurora she does not want to be what society has planned for her.
