For all those who wanted to know, the reason they played this song was because at the time, it was their current single (for alternative radio, anyway, there was no physical single) here in the US.

Playing it in America is a little ironic, but Letterman isn't particularly pro-consumerist (quite the contrary, often), so. I wonder what Letterman meant by, "That explains it." Not my favorite SFA song, but their so-so is still pretty good.
