Would this mechanism be good for cutting carbon/tool steel for knife blades? and it doesn't look like it has much of a throat or does it?

Take a look at the knife forums the Portaband is the industry standard for hobby knife making. I have sold hundreds of these tables over the past couple years with very positive feed back.
