In Cher's case, she had been Cher Bono, but then divorced Sonny Bono and probably figured her maiden name Sarkisian might be too tough for some people to pronounce. One theory, anyway.
And I agree with you about Christina's name!

@simplysweet234 You know, I don't think I know of any entertainers in the last 30-odd years who have changed their names for image. Some will leave off their last names, like Cher. Some women will use their married names, even if, like Pat Benatar and Phylicia Rashad, they are no longer married to the men whose names they still wear.
But apart from nicknames, I think most use the names their parents gave them.
