Join a group of disabled people and supporters on March 26th to demand status for Abdel-Kader Belaouni and demand the Canadian government end its ableist and racist immigration practices and policies.
Kader is a blind refugee claimant who has been forced to live in sanctuary for over two years in Montreal. He faces deportation to unstable Algeria where his safety will be jeopardized and where there are no services for blind people.
He is facing deportation because of Canada's discriminatory immigration policy towards the disabled, not to mention people of colour and the poor. "If you are disabled, it is very likely that you will never become a Canadian citizen because we are considered to be drains on the system. This is offensive, discriminatory and it has to stop," says Loree Erickson, DAMN member and disabled immigrant who will likely not be able to stay in Canada permanently because of ableist policies.
Though we are an important part of every community, Canada actively works to keep disabled people out. The only way this will ever change is if disabled people and our supporters join together to fight for justice for everyone.
