Volvo's old numbering system used to be:
1st digit - series number
2nd digit - cylinders of the engine
3rd digit -number of doors
In the '80s, that third digit was deleted and just made a "0" for all models, but enthusiasts tend to refer to cars of that era by its full proper name (for example, this car would be called a 944). The only exceptions to Volvo's rule are the two cars that have the "8" in the second digit (480 and 780); I don't think either of those cars had V8s.
