GEOMAGNETIC STORM--IN PROGRESS: High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras. A strong (Kp=8) geomagnetic storm is in progress.

Earth's magnetic field has been strongly disturbed since approximately 1300 UT on Sept. 26th when a CME hit our planet. The impact strongly compressed the magnetosphere, exposing geosynchronous satellites to solar wind plasma, and ignited auroras around both poles.

  • Hey folks, does anybody know the music at the end of this video?

  • @pastlifes Ending music used is 28 Strobe (Adagio in D Minor) by John Murphy

  • @SolarWatcher what your doing by keeping the public aware of solar activities is great and i respect that, keep it up :) Just got two questions for you.

what effects can you assume the earth will have due to this storm?

And secondly, there has been a lot of talk about late 2012, early 2013 the sun will produce a big electromagnetic wave towards the earth which will be recorded as one of the biggest and will act like an EMP where it hits. Can you shed some light on it? thank you

  • @CptDanny23 due to the earth's weakened magnetic field, it means the earth's shielding is not performing at optimum levels and charged solar particles can therefore bypass and enter our magnetosphere. So this can have an"EMP" type of influence on areas earth facing at the time of CME impact, as well as wild weather events such as typhoons, cyclones, tornadoes and hurricanes as also strong seismic events felt here on earth.

  • No updates for a week? I love the links but I am not good at interpeting the data, and it is hard to find a good summary,

    Thanks

  • Thanks again for such an awesome clear factual non spun solar observations. Keep up the great work!

  • Another great update as always

  • OMG!!! It is the beginning of the END OF THE WORLD...

  • I'm no nerd or anything but wars so bad about this.....?

  • Great work! Keep it up!

  • If the Earth's magnetic field decides to do it's

periodic flip-flop any time soon, we're in big trouble.

The weakening magnetic field is indicative of

    the approaching cycle too.
