@xmarle in the book the magic and the madness , randy taborelly said that in the world of rock music michael jackson himself considered that he (michael) was the king ,not elvis presley
elizabeth taylor said "the true" king of rock music is michael jackson, she means michael is the rock king, not elvis presley
With thriller (1982) Michael Jackson were able to cross over from soul charts to rock music , experimenting with rock styles as funk, disco, hard rock
elvis was old rock and roll

the king of popular music is just too limited for someone like him who did all kinds of music, and was equally good at each of them... so long live the king of POP, ROCK AND SOUL Mr Michael Jackson...
-
@thesparta1812 Michael Jackson is mainly a rock singer, he is not specifically pop, pop is just an abbreviation of popular
Jackson began as a soul singer (1978) and later he became a rock singer with his album thriller (1982). His group The Jackson Five was a soul music group in the 1960s.
Thriller album was a rock record that contained hard rock, hard funk , soul and ballads.
Michael Jackson is the undisputed "king of pop, rock and soul".

@boyxdance i'm a big MJ fan but i still don't think that soul is what michael jackson was good at i think he was best at pop soul just wasn't his thing after "Off The Wall"

@thesparta1812 Michael Jackson is the "king of soul" since 1980 because he became the most successful soul singer with his album "off the wall" (1978). James Brown was named the "godfather of soul", but I consider brown was the first king of soul in the 1960s and 1970s.
Jackson is the ultimate "king of pop, rock and soul"

@SimoneMJJ welcome ;)

saying he was the king of soul is a insult to james brown
it is Soul Train Awards 1989 not BRE awards.
