Which series do you prefer?, the New Jedi Order series or the Legacy of the Force series?

His first real steps down the dark path began with the Dark Nest Trilogy, which I found to be pretty well written. One thing that turns fans off of the series though (and I really don't blame them) was the whole "joiner" aspect (which you will understand if you read it).

You can see little bits of it during the whole New Jedi Order series but that is quite a few books to read, even tho they are all pretty good.
His turn was gradual through the Legacy of the Force series really, with every book making him more darker then before. It is not many books and you will really get a sense of him turning during this series.

Betrayal is the first in the legacy series and a nice jumping off point if you have not read the novels since the movies
