This is the first short film in the 'Haiku series'.
It was filmed on a 16mm Bolex film camera; the quality of the density of light and dark is noticeable.
In these films I am wanting to explore the simplicity of natural phenomena and how it affects us. This film is about smoke, currents in the air and light combining to produce a vision which is recognisable, beautuiful and suggests 'otherworldliness' or spirituality. We have added the sound to explode the experience and to link our minds with other conitations of the perception of smoke from a candle being extinguished.
Watch with and without the sound and notice the difference.
I have related this film to a Japanese Haiku, as (the actual film) is 17 seconds long, the haiku is 17 'on' (simular to syllables) and it is about 3 elements; light, smoke, air and has the 'cutting' element of music. It's a loose metaphor.
The haiku is not logical but is thoughtful and reflective. It usually has seasonal references. The idea for this film was found in the winter.
Please watch on full screen.
