LIFE OF THE DEAD, Lyrics: Hanoch Levin, Music: Amit Poznansky, performed by the Copenhagen Girls' Choir.

Program notes from the first performance at the ESAJAS CHURCH, Copenhagen June 19th 2009:

It is not every day that a musical piece from abroad has its world premiere in Denmark. This unusual event will take place at 7:30 PM Friday, June the 19th at the Esajas Church in Østerbro (Copenhagen). The chamber ensemble of the Copenhagen Girls' Choir, directed by Claus Vestergaard Jensen, the choir's chief conductor, will perform Israeli composer Amit Poznanskys latest piece, Life of the Dead.

35 year old Amit Poznansky is a highly accomplished composer and arranger. A classically trained pianist, Poznansky has composed music in a wide range of styles for chamber ensembles, orchestras and choirs. He has written and arranged music for numerous stage, television and film productions. Poznansky has collaborated closely with Habima (Israel's national theater) and with the Cameri Theater in Tel-Aviv, where he has recently arranged the music for the highly acclaimed musical Fiddler on the Roof. Unfortunately, Amit Poznansky will not be able to attend the concert, as he is currently on a promotional tour in the US.

Life of the Dead is a song cycle in three movements, featuring poems by the late Hanoch Levin (1943-1999), one of Israel's leading dramatists. The music, based on Levin's 1999 book Life of the Dead, was originally written by Amit Poznansky for his debut album by the same name. This is not the first time that Poznansky has adapted the original work; in 2006 he composed a symphonic suite based on the album, which premiered in San Francisco.

This will be the second time that Amit Poznansky's music is performed in Denmark. In 2008, flautist Henrik Svitzer performed his Waltz for Flute and Piano at the Copenhagen Summer Festival.

This will be this year's last concert before the summer vacation for the Copenhagen Girls' Choir. The Choir will perform music by Benjamin Britten, Morten Kjær and gospel arrangements by Rollo Dilworth. Admission is free.

  • Fantastic version of a beautiful song.

Poznansky has by far written the best musical interpretations of Levin.

In my opinion, In regards to the credit that he deserves within the Israeli culture circles, theres a lot to look forward to.

The copenhagen ladies and their conductor did an absolutely fabulous job. Thank you for bringing this piece to life for us!

  • Maravillosaaaaa!!!!!!

  • @MrViTopol Not at all, we get some notes and lyrics, then we sing it. Half of the time we sing latin, so we have just stopped wondering what we are singing, and started to concentrate on singing it, instead.

  • @ThatRandomGirlAndrea beautiful singing, but did the girls know they were singing a poem about corpse rotting next to the sewage and incest necrophilia in the cemetery ? just curious ;-)
