The church heating had broken down (and, boy, was it cold!) and a lot of singers were off ill - but never mind we pressed on regardless.

Here we are singing at rehearsal an arrangement of Stille Nacht (Silent Night) by one of our sopranos, Sarah Robinson (front row, fourth from the right). The soprano soloist is Lindsey Nicholls.

Music: Franz Xaver Gruber, 1818
Arranged: Sarah Robinson, 2008
Words: Joseph Mohr, 1816/1818
Sung in German

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Alles schläft; einsam wacht
Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Hirten erst kundgemacht
Durch der Engel Halleluja,
Tönt es laut von fern und nah:
Christ, der Retter ist da!
Christ, der Retter ist da!

Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund,
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'.
Christ, in deiner Geburt!
Christ, in deiner Geburt!

English words by John Freeman Young, 1863

Silent night, holy night
All is calm all is bright
'Round yon virgin Mother and Child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night, holy night,
Shepherds quake at the sight.
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav'nly hosts sing Alleluia;
Christ the Saviour is born
Christ the Saviour is born.

Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love's pure light.
Radiant beams from Thy holy face,
With the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

  • Very good recording quality! Good HD video too! Very clean high soprano voice and nice harmonies! You all are dong a fine job!

I understand that song was first written in Bavaria and was sung accompanied by a guitar because the church organ had broken down according to one story I heard!

  • Beautiful soprano voice.

  • It wasn't until I read the previous posting that it struck me there was no supporting music!

    A wonderful piece.

  • A lovely setting of this well known carol and well executed ! look forward to the next one .........
