and in video mode you can also use that zoom not inventing pixels and the audio record it has is the best one in a phone and better than at least all the compact cameras I,ve used (canon g12, canon g15)

and in 3 and 2,4mpx modes (4,91microns - 24microns square) each pixel so as you said the most important thing isn´t the number of pixels, it´s more important to use them correctly and try to have real good pixels in the photos(quality and not quantity)and this phone offers good quality lenss (the best in smarphone in size and materials),the option to do real zoom cropping big photos (not inventing pixels)or to take 41,5mpx photos in a phone, or as nokia said, take low resolution very good photos

the 41,5megapixels are used to make some zoom in the pictures you take or if you want to, to take very big photos. The depth it can make is better than any other phone (look the video I upload about the 808 in all kind of situations).And you must know that the "large" (much more bigger than any mobile and a lot of compact cameras...)sensor is used completely in all resolutions modes: in 41mpx (1,4microns- 2microns square),8mpx (3,17microns- 10microns square),5mpx (4,01microns- 16microns square)

you can also take 41,48mpx image with the camera pro programme (it doesn´t use the tipical 16/9 or 4/3 format if you want to, to use all the sensor size)

darpa have invented a 1.3 gigapixel camera, no phone attached though......

that technology just looks too delicate to not have a screen protector over it of which in theory could just slide over the screen.
