@Mumakil42 Actually, the man who wrote the song continued trading slaves for years after he composed it, and he was never shipwrecked. He did however become an Anglican minister.

This song was wrote by a slave trader whos ship sunk at sea and he made a deal with god if he saved his life hed become a priest. He was saved after floating for a couple days and became a piece and wrote this song.
