Wings Over Illawarra was a concern to those surrounding the airport particularly due to low noisy operations over residential areas. The event does not appear to have Civil Aviation Safety Authority approval since council applied for a Special Event Zone. There is reason to believe that the Wings Over Illawarra was a Airshow that requires CASA approval since the day included organised aircraft operations over a public gathering. Such operations included formation flying, aerobatics, and continuous aircraft operations in both military and civil aircraft. Would CASA have approved such operations over residential areas?
