What about the hole for the cabling then?

Guys, this is a solid brick wall so there are no studs and no cavity behind the wall for the cabling. If you wanted to conceal the cables for this particular install then surface mounted conduit can be used or you could chase the cables into the brickwork.

There is a light switch panel near the door, so there must be a cavity of some sort.

Light switch has been sunk into wall to make flush and cables have been chased. This is an old victorian house in London. There is definately no cavity.

Step 2. Make sure you determine were the studs are located!

Solid brick wall so no studs. Even if this was a stud or plasterboard wall you dont necessarily have to locate and then hang the screen on the studs. You just have to be sure you use the correct fixings and spread them over the foot print of the bracket so the weight of the TV is spread. Plasterboard Toggle fixings have a sheer weight bearing capacity of nearly 250KG.
