We created this video for entry into the Wartburg College "Tell Me" Video Festival. The theme of the 2009 festival is the environment and the goal is to educate and inform others in a creative way regarding more sustainable use of the environment.

We chose to focus the video on energy-conscious use of computers. This is a subject that has significant implications for the environment and is something we think is too often overlooked. In order to make the message especially relevant to a college type audience and in keeping with the festival's "YouTube" theme, we chose stop motion as a style. This allowed us to take a step out of the box and let the computers themselves present the story and make the case for more efficient computing.

But stop motion is not just for short, clever videos put together by college students with a camera and some time on their hands. Stop motion can be found in several major productions. Remember the AT-AT walkers from The Empire Strikes Back or the dinosaurs from Jurassic Park?

  • Needs more energy!

  • Awesome energy

  • Actually, I think the video makes exactly the point you mention. One of the computers says "It is even more shocking that half of that energy is wasted to heat. Because of this air conditioners must work harder to compensate which wastes even more energy." In the summer, buildings with several computers left on waste more energy on air conditioning to keep those buildings at a comfortable temperature for people.

  • hmm, strange that whoever made this really think air conditioners cool the air. In the room yes but on the whole they produce heat.
