I grew up walking those borders everyday to go to school (Auf dem Tempelhofer Feld). I had a diplomatic pass. We lived in East Berlin but spent all day in West Berlin. I can confirm there where no Russians at Checkpoint Charlie. Allthough you could see some KGB vehicles every now and then...
I still remember one Blond Angel controlling the East side. She never gave me a physical search though ;-)
I was untouchable that time..

US Soldiers would never let the American flag touch the ground!

Just came back and had my pic taken with one, had an amazing time in Berlin, brilliant city.

They are fake solders for tourist effect.
When you were there did you get an "Ample Man" sign from East Berlin? An original is highly collectable.

@bolobolo - you must be talking about the nice Vopo-girl who told me about the x-ray-machine for controlling birthday-presents when asked about the big silver thing in there. It was '81, I was 8 years old and absolutely in love with her. But my aunty had something hidden in her pocket and couldn't wait to drag me on, hihi. -Sigh- I hope, she found something new after her country fell.

This isn't even the real Checkpoint Charlie - that building is in a museum now. This doesn't look like the real checkpoint and it's not even in the same place that Checkpoint Charlie was in. Not even close. Stupid tourist shit.

la stupidita dell uomo non ha limiti. come si fa a dividere una citta con un muro . boh, non riusciro mai a capirlo

Just because you don't care doesn't mean history doesn't exist. You want to stay stupid, go ahead. Others like to learn historic events and facts.

I was at CPC just last week.
There was a guy dressed as a US soldier standing at the sandbags like the guys above.
I asked him in German if he was German. No he said. He was French.By the way the sandbags have tuned to rags and the sand is concrete. I often thought in Berlin whether the Germans were now tired of the wall story and now 20 years later just want to move on - not forget - just move on.
One German told me the big joke is that the Germans managed to sell the wall 4 times.

To all, these ar enot US Soldiers. They are dressed up for photographic purposes, for tourists. I was stationed in Berlin (6/502 INF, McNair Barracks) from 1990 to 1994 and just recently went back to Berlin in November 2007. The "Soldiers" are Germans in uniform to make money from tourists, which is ok, because it was fun to be there again and speak with them. I showed them my military ID and told them I was a REAL Berlin Brigade SOldier. I got some cool pics with them too.
it´s from 2006 ;-) - check recording time!!!
