First, the player has to understand why you have to hit behind the ball. Second is that they have to understand that there is no compression on the ball with the club because of the sand between the ball and the clubface, that's why you can not quit on the shot otherwise you might not get out of the bunker. I like the idea of Jack Nicklaus to think double the strength of pitching. Have an open stance to imitate the impact position of the body and just have the clubface directed to the hole.

Thanks for this very useful tip. I have struggled with bunker shots for a very long time. I took your instruction to my local practice facility and for the first time I was able to consistently get out of the bunker with soft-landing shots. Putting my weight on my left side, the thought of crashing down into the sand just behind the ball, and following through really helped.

What about the club face? Open, right? And an open stance to counteract the open face. Correct? So, if its sitting up, open face but if its buried close the club face?
