The sun was setting, the air was still, and the water smooth. There was just enough time for a quick flight--a climb to 1,500 feet over Tar Bay on the James River--to watch the sun go down.
It wasn't the most beautiful of sunsets, but the sky was so pleasant and the air so smooth that I didn't want to come down.
But the light was fading quickly, so I had descend even quicker to land while the water was still plainly visible and there was enough light left to secure the airplane for the night.
The airplane is a SeaRey, an amphibious flying boat that I built from a kit produced by Progressive Aerodyne. When I logged the flight after landing the Hobbes meter showed 1022.4 hours.
