In Knit Basics #5, Valerie Kurita, Editor of the North American Edition of Verena Knitting, demonstrates how to KNIT THROUGH THE BACK LOOP. www.VerenaKnitting.com
I wouldn't call it a "purl" per say since you are still knitting the stitch, A purl would be if you were bringing that right hand needle through the front and to the left instead of from the right and through the back. I hope this makes sense!
Great clip, thanks. I have found ebeginnersknitting (.) com to be very helpful also

So, it is a purl without having to bring the yarn to the front, right?
