Theories abound about what really happened to swing era icon Glenn Miller. The facts, as presented don't add up, reports went missing and a variety of stories have surfaced. Now, award winning journalist Hunton Downs, Lt. Col, US Army, Ret., who has spent more than 60 years putting together pieces of this puzzle, offers the most definitive - and fascinating - account of this mysterious disappearance.

@Poisson4147 I concur completely. A selection of the recordings made for the 'American Broadcasting Station in Europe' is available - in the UK at least - on CD and Miller's german is, indeed, dreadful. Johnny Desmond and Iris Manning did better and Ray McKinley had the good sense not to try!

The assertion that Glenn Miller spoke fluent German is rubbish. According to biographer George T. Simon - who was both a close friend and spent time with the AAF Band - Miller's lines were written out phonetically when he made those BBC propaganda broadcasts. Plus he was being coached in elementary German so he could talk to some of the POWs being housed in England. If he were fluent, why waste all that time and effort?
Bottom line: No German = no negotiating ability = no conspiracy.

I believe his plane went down in the water, but unless we find the plane or what is left of it or some real proof that he lived, we will never know what really happened to Glenn Miller.
So many people have said many things over the years that no one knows what to believe.
However, Glenn's plane was in an area of the English Channel where planes were dropping bombs so they could land.
You could not have bombs in your plane when you landed.
Thus, one hit Glenn's plane.

I worked for the German Army for a long time and it was well known to that Glenn Miller was involved in intelligence work for the Allies. The Channel dip is part of a huge cover-up. As Hitler said: "The bigger the lie, the more people believe it." Definitely the case here. Try and dig out gov`t files even today, you will fund yourself stonewalled...

No, I'm not a PhD. I was born during WWII and have relatives who flew B-17 missions. I listened to their stories. I thought I was just passing on some friendly information. Now, don't care to read your books. I would have liked to have known about them and read them, but you apparently are so full of yourself, that I don't really care to get to know you. I do hope your bad day gets better because you apparently have a lot of them.

It was standard procedure for American and Brit air crews to dump their loads in the Channel on return if there was a problem. That is why departing American missions flew around the east or west side of the nation: the Brits were returning during the morning. The Americans bombed during the day. The Brits bomed at night. There were radio beacons on the east and west sides called Splashers. Splasher Six--on the west side--was perhaps the most famous.
