The contrails are dark for the exact same reason some of the clouds are dark - they are not being directly illuminated by the sun. The sun is low on the horizon, and there are many clouds that fall between the sun and the contrail.

I have seen the dark trails during the day and the material drift by my window as it falls. It was definitely not the white contrail material. I find all of this very strange and unsettling. I have even noticed different types of the white trails. I recognize that some things seen are normal or have natural explanations but a lot isn't.
