i read the wall street j review of reynolds retromania, it did not mention rap, since rap is the biggest seller, and by definition has no melody or notes, i wanted to know if he thought rap was the biggest retro of all time, taking us back maybe at least 37000 years ago when the first flute was invented

@Flowmotion1000 Yeah! not only is he lamenting it, but he even manages to completely miss the fact that hes making money off discussing the "retro" which should seemingly be just as bad. in fact music journalists are the worst kind of writers. they merely discuss other peoples work, without ever making work that has real depth themselves. non-musicians writing about music is as dumb as it sounds. simon reynolds seems to be getting a little cynical...

What is amusing is the fact that the early 80's was a time totally obsessed with the 50's and 60's - The Style Council (Tamla Mowtown),The Jesus and Mary Chain (The Velvet Underground),The B52's (everything 60's),REM (The Byrds),Stray Cats (50's rockabilly) etc etc.
And yet he is lamenting the current retromania.

Probably the best music critic and author currently active. "Rip it Up and Start Again" is one of the essential and important books on music and pop culture. It's nice to see Simon looks like an amiable albeit fruity man. :-)

Simon Reynolds has the hardest face in music journalism. You can literally punch it all day.
Very good music writer, laughable dissing comments if you have really read his books.
