U.S. Coast Guard video (posted by Peninsula Daily News, Port Angeles, WA) of a Navy barge headed to Naval Magazine Indian Island with an estimated 9,000 pounds of munitions that hit the rocks near Anacortes on Monday morning (Oct. 10, 2011).
Coast Guard Chief Robert Lanier said the incident happened about 5:20 a.m. when the 322-foot barge St. Elias, which was being towed by a tugboat, ran aground on Belle Rock.
Lanier said the munitions were bound for Indian Island, the Navy ammunition and weapons storage depot across from Port Townsend.
The munitions appear to be stable and safe, and there were no reported injuries in the grounding.
The Coast Guard has found no evidence of an oil spill but some damage to the hull is likely.
