  • The actress in this scene who plays his daughter many years later admitted that she was a bit of a snob because she had just come from acting in a Shakespeare play, and she saw Fields as an old, drunken vaudevillian. So at the time she did not relish being in a movie with him. She said she didnt realize until years later that she had worked with a comedy genius. And became proud of the movie and getting to work with WC Fields.

  • @hugatag In real life, Fields had a son who, according to him, was a mommas boy and had turned against him thanks to the influence of his shrewish wife (whom he never divorced). He once wrote to her that he felt if they had a daughter instead of a son, the daughter would "see through your perfidy, Harriet" And would side with him. So, the on screen loyal daughters you see in his movies are the daughters he wished he had in real life, but didnt.

  • he did all this...........with a straight edge!!! fields must have had balls the size of cantaloupes. DANG..........

  • WC Fields movies were usually played late at night on some obscure TV channel, probably UHF (I bet most don't even know what that is), before that days of cable TV. I watched while in bed, and had to contain my laughter so as not to wake up the wife and kids. That was impossible. The whole bed shook and so did the rest of the house, and I woke up everyone anyway. I've been watching a lot of his movie scenes on YouTube this weekend and my gut hurts from all the laughing. What a genius!

  • @classicphile she did a splendid job possibly, for the reason you mentioned. tis a shame i twasn't round then.

  • @Hellzyead thanks for your input!

  • excruciatingly wonderful & a kind man esp. to his wife.

  • haha he is interesting! haha

  • The daughter in this scene is Jean Rouverol, who is now in her 90s and just made a lovely short film called "Finding Jean Lewis." The writer/director is Rachel Johnson, up to now best known for an animated short, "The Toll Collector." Ms. Rouverol and her husband, Hugo Butler, were best known as screenwriters. Her mother, Aurania Rouverol, created the character of Andy Hardy.

  • this isn't funny...

  • My all time favorite movie!
