2011 IZOD IndyCar Series - Indianapolis 500 [Full race]

The winner of this race, Dan Wheldon, was involved in the huge 15 car crash at Las Vegas motor speedway on October 16th, which caused him to get airborne and fly into the catch fence, with the cockpit area taking most of the impact. He was taken to a hospital, where medicals attempted to save his life. But he was later ultimately pronounced dead in the hospital. He passed away from severe internal injuries and it was impossible to save his life.

The drivers that managed to avoid the crash remained at the speedway later arranged a 5 lap tribute drive to honour the death of Dan.

Rest in Peace, it's a sad day for the racing world.

I knew Dan Wheldon won this race, but i didn't know how it ended. I was thinking with half a lap to go, how on earth does Wheldon win this. Feel so bad to Hildebrand, but damn did he make the end to that race something to remember.

I was so blessed to be there. Been to every 500 since 2005, which of course Dan won as well. Me and my friends were together between turns 3-4 last May screaming and almost lost our voices when Dan crossed the Start/Finish on lap 200... Just an amazing day. We miss you Dan!

Afterthought.......I wrote Cary Agajanian after the team's win at Indy, and he said it best when he was kind enough to respond and Cary said....." I think it was pure destiny."

The Spirit of "Ol' Calhoun" revisited that day in a chassis that was 9 years old......a 2002 Dallara.
