I've always believed Mozart's genius is in his piano music and the violin sonatas are not my favorite but I wanted to upload this to give everyone a taste of the best recordings available of these sonatas. It is my opinion that the best Mozart Sonatas ever recorded were made by Grumiaux / Haskill, after doing a bit of research I found out that the following Mozart sonatas recorded by Grumiaux/Haskill are in print:

K 301, 304, 376, 378, 454

but not

K 526

My favorite is 454 and I was going to upload that, but it is in print so I wont upload it and since the 526 with Haskill is out of print i decided it is ok to upload. Note that someone put up a video of Grumiaux playing this with Kelin (to which this is a video response) but not with Haskill.

I encourage everyone to get all the recordings of Grumiaux with Haskill and anything Grumiaux recorded of Mozart for that matter, no one ever did better with Mozart and I doubt anyone ever will. This is of course my opinion which is of yours subjective and not fact, it is the responsibility of every musician (an any appreciator of fine music) to decide what a performance means to them and how a piece of music should be played whether its them playing or someone else, sometimes listening to someone else play something can change your perception of how the should can or should be shaped. I would also like to mention there is a dvd of the lovely Anne Sophie Mutter playing all Mozart concertos, sonatas and trios on dvd that is worth investigating, i suspect it was recorded for the 300th anniversary of Mozart's birth if Im not mistaken (anyone care to confirm this?)

I have uploaded rare out of print and unreleased recordings that are difficult to find, I hope you like them.

Since they are so difficult to find no one should mind me uploading them, if you have issues with me uploading them please send me a message and I will remove them.

  • I heard only one recording of that violinist before - Concerts of Mozart No 1,3. It was about 15 years ago and from that time I remember, how much it impressed me. It is very different style, as compared to many other great violinists, and I am sure, he is great.

  • i have his recording of viotti 22 on my channel hope you like it

i can fully recommend his recordings of mozart concertos and faure sonatas, well worth spending the money

  • Kentcollier:

Did you take into consideration the difference between Mozart's time and people today? Two hundred and fifty years ago the fastest people could travel was at the speed of a running horse. Today, faster than the speed of sound. Grumiaux and Haskil's speed in the KV 526 Presto would have shocked Mozart. It would be like showing a film at breakneck speed. Yes, Mozart was critical of Clementi. But were they not rivals?

  • This is practice temrpo. The movemnet is marked Presto!!!, not Allegro 'comfortabile". This reminds me of a letter from Mozart to his father relating Clementi's performance. He writes, "Clementi, like all Italians is a "charlatano"; he writes Presto and alla breve and plays Allegro and four-four"

  • I agree with you, the best comb ever to play mozart

  • I am used to the Thibaud and Long version. This is very slow and tempered in comparison.

  • This sounds more like a pianosonata with accompanying violin! (which actually I think it was meant to be.) Just listen to the unstoppable Clara!

  • beautiful! I am playing this sonata right now, but I do not even come close to being as good as Grumiaux.

Thank you for posting this wonderful video!
