@DillingerEP I think it's just supposed to give the public more of an incentive to buy the CD rather than illegally download the album. Tool did something similar when they released 10,000 days. The casing had 3D pictures and stereoscopic glasses to look at them with. It's just a nice gimmick to have when you buy the album :)
