One of the hottest activities in security today is "Regular Expression Patter Matching" because it makes it easy to look for things in either large blocks of data or perhaps even streams. But, while RegEx is great for what it can do, it is tough for how complex the computations can be. Fortunately, at RSA 2012, Intel was able to show a team demo where Sensory Networks was able to leverage the Intel Data Plane Development Kit ( http://j.mp/IntelDPDK ) to work with the flagship product, HyperScan, all running on top of Wind River Linux & the latest generation of the Intel Xeon processors - the E5 Family ( http://j.mp/E5Xeon ) - to be able RegEx pattern matching on high speed streams without the need for specialized hardware. In real world, you would see a system like at as a high-speed packet analysis security system or in next-generation firewalls, as well as other places.
